How to Use Microsoft MFA on Your Mac
Microsoft MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) is a security feature that adds an extra layer of protection to your online accounts. With MFA, you need to provide two pieces of information to sign in: your password and a verification code that is sent to your phone or generated by an app. This way, even if someone knows your password, they can't access your account without your phone or app.
If you use Microsoft 365 or other Microsoft services on your Mac, you might be required to set up and use MFA by your organization or by Microsoft. In this article, we'll show you how to do that using the Microsoft Authenticator app on your iPhone or iPad.
Step 1: Download and Install the Microsoft Authenticator App
The Microsoft Authenticator app is a free app that you can use to generate verification codes for MFA. You can also use it to sign in without a password, using your face ID, fingerprint, or PIN. To download and install the app, follow these steps:
On your iPhone or iPad, go to the App Store and search for \"Microsoft Authenticator\".
Tap on the app icon and then tap on \"Get\" to download and install it.
Open the app and tap on \"Get started\".
Sign in with your Microsoft account or work or school account.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup.
Step 2: Add Your Account to the App
After you install the app, you need to add your account to it so that it can generate verification codes for you. To do that, follow these steps:
Open the app and tap on the \"+\" icon at the top right corner.
Select \"Work or school account\" if you use Microsoft 365 or other Microsoft services for work or school, or select \"Personal account\" if you use them for personal use.
Scan the QR code that appears on your Mac screen when you sign in to your account, or enter the code manually if you can't scan it.
Tap on \"Done\" to finish adding your account.
Step 3: Use the App to Sign in with MFA
Once you add your account to the app, you can use it to sign in with MFA on your Mac. To do that, follow these steps:
On your Mac, go to the website or app that you want to sign in to with your Microsoft account or work or school account.
Enter your username and password as usual.
You'll be prompted to verify your identity using MFA. You'll see two options: approve a notification or enter a code.
If you choose to approve a notification, you'll get a push notification on your iPhone or iPad. Open it and tap on \"Approve\" after verifying that it's from the same website or app that you're signing in to.
If you choose to enter a code, open the app and look for the six-digit code next to your account name. Enter it on your Mac screen and tap on \"Verify\".
You'll be signed in to your account securely.
You can also use the app to sign in without a password, using your face ID, fingerprint, or PIN. To do that, follow these steps:
On your Mac, go to the website or app that you want to sign in to with your Microsoft account or work or school account.
Enter your username and tap on \"Next\".
You'll see an option to sign in with your phone. Tap on it.
You'll get a push notification on your iPhone or iPad. Open it and verify your identity using your face ID, fingerprint, or PIN.
You'll be signed in to your account securely. ec8f644aee
